Iron

The foundry at SAW is an arts education and training facility where professional artists and students are encouraged to engage in all stages of the casting process.  Facilities include a coke fired furnace with a 600 pound capacity, a 3,100 square foot mold making studio, a wax melt out kiln for investment castings and a fully equipped metal shop for finishing work.  Consumables such as core glue, grinding discs and lumber are available.

The 13th USUK International Cast Iron Sculpture Symposium

SSW: £350 + materials (room included)

The 13th USUK Iron Symposium will take place for the first time at two venues: Salem Art Works, USA and Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW), UK. During each 15 day symposium, internationally selected artists will produce work in cast iron with experimental and traditional sand molds using a coke fired iron cupola furnace. In addition to artists’ presentations, panels and technical demonstrations, artists learn from each other by working together in the critically engaged environment created by the symposium and its unique sites.

Highlights of the 13th USUK Iron Symposium at SAW include a public iron pour in Salem Village on Saturday, June 23rd, an iron pour at SAW on Wednesday, June 27th and sculpture exhibitions at North Main Gallery and the Historic Salem Courthouse on Saturday, June 30th. An iron pour with live fire performances will take place at Scottish Sculpture Workshop, in the UK.

Artists may apply to either the US component at SAW, the UK component at SSW or both, please specify your interest. Digital applications will be accepted via email. Please email USUK Director, Coral Lambert at lambertc@alfred.edu by March 15th* with the following:

6th Annual Intercollegiate Iron Pour

Fee: $75 + materials

The 6-th Annual Intercollegiate Iron Pour is a chance for college students from across the nation to come together to share techniques, ideas and resources in iron casting.  Participants spend the weekend working in groups to prepare the furnace and pour site. The $75 fee includes participation in the pour as well as meals and camping for the weekend. Interested participants should contact the SAW office as well as their respective art departments.

Artists interested in taking a mold making workshop prior to the pour should contact the office for pricing and scheduling.
